Apple Releases iOS 4.3.3 With Location Tracking Bug Fixes

iOS 4.3.3 update
On Wednesday, Apple has released their iOS update that takes care of the much debated iPhone location tracking controversy. The “consolidated.db” file that gained attention in the recent weeks made Apple quickly release the update.

iOS 4.3.3 update is available through iTunes and iOS 4.3.3 is applicable for GSM-based iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, and third- and fourth-generation iPod touch. iOS 4.2.8 update is available for the CDMA iPhone 4.

iOS 4.3.3 update contains changes to the iOS crowd-sourced location database cache including:

  • Reduces the size of the cache
  • No longer backs up the cache to iTunes
  • Deletes the cache entirely when Location Servcies is turned off.

This update comes with an objective to solve bugs concerning iOS 4 that had a database to a year’s worth of Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower locations. Apple said they don’t think the iPhone needs to store more than seven days worth of such data. Now, Apple has made a point that the data should not be collected when users turn off Location Services on their iPhone, and the fact that it was being stored was a bug.

iPad keyboard’s shift-drag capitalization bug on iOS 4.2.1

ipad keyboard capitalization bug The iOS 4.2.1 update was recently rolled out and the update also brought few most awaited features on the iPad while it also brought few unwanted features with it. Since upgrading, users have found themselves struggling to use the handy shift-drag trick to type capitals. Now, if you move your finger down to shift, place it on the screen, drag to the letter you want, release it — you’ll get something random. Rarely, it’s the character you were aiming for. More often, it’s some other character you dragged your finger over on the way to it.

This is really quite annoying if you are using iOS 4.2.1 . We need some help , Apple!

US Open Bans iPads because they think it is used to detonate things

Just a week ago, the US Open’s cool new app was discovered that let users watch all the matches and get up-to-the-minute scores on their iPad. But we’ve found there’s one little problem—you’re not allowed to take your iPad to the actual matches.

Visitors to Arthur Ashe Stadium for the US Open tennis matches get a nasty surprise—they can’t take their iPads inside. Even more surprising was the reason a security worker gave for the ban: “They’re using iPads to detonate things.”?Huh? Then why are they allowed on planes?

No official statement on this policy has come from US Open officials. Still allowed are iPhones, and there’s even an app that helps you find the quickest bathroom lines. Maybe US Open security thinks they’re too small to “detonate things.”

New Security Patch for iPad and Other Apple Devices to be Released Soon

Apple has recently announced that it has developed the patch to combat the crucial security flaw in iOS which made the remote jailbreaking of iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch possible. The security flaw can prove quite costly as the hackers can access all your data and apps of your iPad, remotely.

Natalie Kerries, Apple’s representative, has informed the media that the patch has been completed by Apple and will soon be released. She has also mentioned that the iPad developers will be guided accordingly for developing safe apps so that the apps don’t face any rejection in the App Store. However, no time frame has been declared about the launching date of the patch.

Meanwhile, “so far there have not been reported any of such attacked to have taken place,’ said Michael Price, the Operations Manager at MacAfee Labs.

Further, according to John Hering, the CEO of mobile security firm Lookout, co-ordination will be required among nearly 15 handset makers globally and Apple, to successfully deliver the patch. It is likely that iPad and iPhone users will actually have no option but to manually install the patch through iTunes, he added.

New lawsuit against Apple as overheated iPads malfunction

A petition has been filed in the Federal Court in Oakland, California, against Apple Inc., on July 23, claiming that, the iPad “does not live up to the reasonable consumer’s expectations created by Apple” as it “overheats so quickly under common weather conditions.”
The iPad has seen grand success since the day it was launched and has actually developed a huge fan base very soon. However, the complain about overheating has always been there and this lawsuit probably makes an official point of it. Bloomberg quoted the complaint saying, in direct sunlight, the tablet “turns off, sometimes after just a few minutes of use.”
Co-incidentally the case has been filed 3 days after Apple has announced their sales report on July 20 figuring a sale of 3.27 millions iPads in the last quarter. It’s noteworthy that the iPad which has been introduced on April 3, has almost outsold the decade old iPod.
iOS devices are known to offer an emergency overheating mode which shuts down the device immediately and displays a warning screen until and unless the device has sufficiently cooled down to allow normal operations. However the emergency overheating mode allows only the emergency calls on iPhone. Apple has published a guiding document on the issue of overheating for the iPhone 3G, and update it periodically. The updated guide is now available for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPad.
The case has been booked as ‘Baltazar v. Apple Inc., 10-03231, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (Oakland).’

iPad Banned By Universities

The iPad Wi-Fi issue seems to be getting worse day by day. After Israel banned iPad in their territory, now Princeton and George Washington University have decided to block the iPad’s too. The main cause behind this is bandwidth overload caused by iPad’s and the students who try to access internet from their laptop are kicked off the wireless network.

Princeton has blocked around 50 percent of iPad’s from being able to access the wireless network, and the George Washington University doesn’t support any apple products. There had been similar problems when the iPhone was launched but Steve Schuster, IT director of the Cornell University’s says they are working to ensure that the iPad does not have devastating consequences on the network.

Such issues may restrict iPad usage in other organizations in future also, this is going to disappoint many iPad fans and Apple too , and may also adversely affect iPad development . We hope Apple’s iPad development team fixes this Wi-Fi issues very soon before the international release and also gets a green signal from all such organizations who have currently banned iPad in their premises.

Wi-Fi Fixes from Apple

While there have been many issues on iPad’s Wi-Fi functionality and have been a major concern for the iPad owners since the day it launched , but  apple came up with resolution a few days later, this was something apple posted for the bunch of complains on the very first day .

Cause of the problem :

Under certain conditions, iPad may not automatically rejoin a known Wi-Fi network after restart or waking from sleep. This can occur with some third-party Wi-Fi routers that are dual-band capable when:

  • Using the same network name for each network
  • Using different security settings for each network

Solution to these problems :

If you encounter this issue, try the following:

  • Create separate Wi-Fi network names to identify each band. This can be done easily by appending one or more characters to the current network name. (Example: Add a G to the 802.11b/g network name and an N to the 802.11n network name.)
  • Ensure that both networks use the same security type (WEP, WPA, WPA2, and so on)
  • If the issue persists, reset your network settings using Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Note: Always ensure that your Wi-Fi router firmware is up to date.

Has anyone experienced this issue and was the Apple’s solution helpful ?

Why My IPad is “Not Charging”

Since the day iPad was launched there have been many issues coming up like Wi-Fi problemsoverheating , inability to handle IMAP from Yahoo and many other email service providers , charging problems , most of these are design / hardware issues causing a cloud of confusion amongst users and doubts of having acquired a defective device .

A day later Apple explains why the device shows not charging notification when charged through a computer and how it could be resolved

As the iPad has hefty power requirements when compared to the iPhone’s and iPod’s thus it requires a high power USB port , these are generally not present in computers like older Mac’s and Windows. In case you connect you iPad to such computers (low powered USB port) it would show Not charging in the top right corner but that doesn’t mean that low powered USB ports cannot charge the device , charging will only take place when  the device is put to sleep mode otherwise this power will be used for device operation and there will be no dissipation of battery power, so its like your iPad is running on DC power from your computer. In this case it will take a longer period of time to charge the device equally, and you can see a notification of charging while in sleep mode as said by Apple.

For faster charging you can use iPad’s 10 watt USB power adapter , or use a USB port of recent Mac’s where your device can be charged and used altogether , so you don’t need to send your iPad to Sleep .

Here is more about what apple said in technical terms:

The USB ports on Apple computers provide 5 V (Volts) and 500 mA (Milliamps) to each port, regardless of whether the port is USB 1.1 or USB 2.0. This is in compliance with USB specifications. On some newer Intel-based Macs, such as the MacBook (13-inch, Late 2007), when a device requiring more than 5V and 500mA is connected, the port with that device connected to it becomes a high-powered port capable of offering up to 1200 mA at 12 V. That port will continue to operate as a high-powered port until the device is removed.

In short there’s nothing wrong with your iPad its just hungry for power, and needs more power than what typically your USB ports provide. So if you have the latest Mac you would never see such an error , but for Windows users USB charging is not the best option , instead go for the 10watt USB power adapter to charge up your iPad.
