IPad No More Banned In Israel

The ban on iPad finally comes to an end in Israel which has been a big issue for tourists carrying an iPad with them. More than 20 iPad’s were confiscated and tourists had to pay daily storage fees without their own interest just because they carried it along to Israel and were afraid to ship their device back to their territory .

The Israel Communication Ministry previously said that the iPad’s would interfere with other frequency band’s and create a chaos for other wireless devices. After consulting Apple Inc , a International laboratory  and few European counterparts the tests proved that the device identifies the Wi-fi access point in its surroundings and adjusts itself automatically and with this Israel Minister of communications Moshe Kakhlon approved the import of iPad to Israel on Sunday 25th. A customer in Israel bought an iPad for about 5900 yuan( US$ 864 approx.)  from an Electronics store .

iPad’s approval in Israel market was unexpected at this state , it has come up as a surprise for iPad developers who are happy with this news and can penetrate into new markets . The ban in Universities is also supposed to be removed once significant changes are made to the device by Apple .

iPad Banned By Universities

The iPad Wi-Fi issue seems to be getting worse day by day. After Israel banned iPad in their territory, now Princeton and George Washington University have decided to block the iPad’s too. The main cause behind this is bandwidth overload caused by iPad’s and the students who try to access internet from their laptop are kicked off the wireless network.

Princeton has blocked around 50 percent of iPad’s from being able to access the wireless network, and the George Washington University doesn’t support any apple products. There had been similar problems when the iPhone was launched but Steve Schuster, IT director of the Cornell University’s says they are working to ensure that the iPad does not have devastating consequences on the network.

Such issues may restrict iPad usage in other organizations in future also, this is going to disappoint many iPad fans and Apple too , and may also adversely affect iPad development . We hope Apple’s iPad development team fixes this Wi-Fi issues very soon before the international release and also gets a green signal from all such organizations who have currently banned iPad in their premises.

iPad Brings Good News For iPad Fans

Recently Apple updated its online stores with March 7th as its new shipping date for US customers willing to buy the 3G equipped variants of its iPad by today . While this comes as a good news to citizens of US planning to buy an iPad , International customers will be disappointed to hear the news because they still have to wait for a month .

Apple says :

“Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.”

Coming to US market AT&T will be ready and waiting for you to activate the $30 a month unlimited data plan on your iPad , but customers would not be bound to a contract by AT&T .

O2, Orange and Vodafone had confirmed they will be offering the iPad to UK customers, and few other area but with this news coming in , we expect the iPad shipping to delay by few more days  .

iPad Banned In Israel

If you treat iPad as you wife , then you are really going to miss it on your trip to Israel. The country has banned all iPad imports and the same is also applicable on tourists carrying an iPad. If they find you carrying an iPad , they would confiscate it and you would be charged a daily fee until the you depart their country or ship the iPad back to your country .

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allows Wi-Fi broadcasting at higher power levels than are allowed in Europe and Israel – this means that the stronger signal could consume higher bandwidth, or throw off others wireless connections .

Nati Schubert , a senior deputy director of the Communication Ministry says “If you operate equipment in a frequency band which is different from the others that operate on that frequency band, then there will be interference,”  and also told AP  ”We don’t care where people buy their equipment … but without regulation, you would have chaos.”

There have also been few issues in the past with Apple’s products , like the iPhone which wasn’t officially allowed until December last year.

Israeli officials said the ban has nothing to do with trade and is simply a precaution to assure that the iPad doesn’t disrupt service for wireless devices already in use in Israel. Schubert expects this problem to be resolved before the official international release .

Iphone Works as a Wireless Cam for iPad

Yes if you have an iPhone you could share its camera with the blind iPad , its pretty simple you just need to go to iTunes and download a Camera A app for iPad ( costs around £0.59 )and Camera B app for iPhone (absolutely free) , pair your devices over Bluetooth and your wireless cam for iPad is ready .

To take pictures through iPad just tap the icon at the bottom bar in iPad and hold your iPhone pointed toward the object at the same time , and your done . And if you want to save pics in both the devices you just need to flip the toggle switch in the lower right corner of the screen .

The App actually allows iPad to mirror iPhone display , you can use this app to actually turn your iPad into a gigantic iPhone .

Wi-Fi Fixes from Apple

While there have been many issues on iPad’s Wi-Fi functionality and have been a major concern for the iPad owners since the day it launched , but  apple came up with resolution a few days later, this was something apple posted for the bunch of complains on the very first day .

Cause of the problem :

Under certain conditions, iPad may not automatically rejoin a known Wi-Fi network after restart or waking from sleep. This can occur with some third-party Wi-Fi routers that are dual-band capable when:

  • Using the same network name for each network
  • Using different security settings for each network

Solution to these problems :

If you encounter this issue, try the following:

  • Create separate Wi-Fi network names to identify each band. This can be done easily by appending one or more characters to the current network name. (Example: Add a G to the 802.11b/g network name and an N to the 802.11n network name.)
  • Ensure that both networks use the same security type (WEP, WPA, WPA2, and so on)
  • If the issue persists, reset your network settings using Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Note: Always ensure that your Wi-Fi router firmware is up to date.

Has anyone experienced this issue and was the Apple’s solution helpful ?

App Store: An Unfair Game for developers

Apple recently launched iPad apps like iBooks , Pages , keynotes and Numbers , and were published on the App store even though they use private APIs which other iPad developers don’t have access to, if these apps would had been submitted by other developers they would had been rejected by App store .

These first party apps have features like access to system dictionary, true brightness control , and few more which are not available in the current API , this being major cause of frustration for other iPhone and iPad developers

Popular Instapaper app developer Marco Arment says:

This has been problematic in our industry before, and we’re going to start seeing the same arguments against Apple – rightfully so – as they move into more application markets and exert unfair advantages.

That’s not the kind of development or software-market environment I want to see, as it would be a waste of a great platform and great potential. Ideally, Apple should only publish first-party App Store apps that would be approved if they were submitted by a third party, and they should therefore use no undocumented or prohibited APIs.

These programming classes would most probably be available in the upcoming releases of iPhone /iPad SDK , maybe these APIs are experimental or in process , but for iPad developers it’s really an unfair games when the completion isn’t playing by the same rules.

Why My IPad is “Not Charging”

Since the day iPad was launched there have been many issues coming up like Wi-Fi problemsoverheating , inability to handle IMAP from Yahoo and many other email service providers , charging problems , most of these are design / hardware issues causing a cloud of confusion amongst users and doubts of having acquired a defective device .

A day later Apple explains why the device shows not charging notification when charged through a computer and how it could be resolved

As the iPad has hefty power requirements when compared to the iPhone’s and iPod’s thus it requires a high power USB port , these are generally not present in computers like older Mac’s and Windows. In case you connect you iPad to such computers (low powered USB port) it would show Not charging in the top right corner but that doesn’t mean that low powered USB ports cannot charge the device , charging will only take place when  the device is put to sleep mode otherwise this power will be used for device operation and there will be no dissipation of battery power, so its like your iPad is running on DC power from your computer. In this case it will take a longer period of time to charge the device equally, and you can see a notification of charging while in sleep mode as said by Apple.

For faster charging you can use iPad’s 10 watt USB power adapter , or use a USB port of recent Mac’s where your device can be charged and used altogether , so you don’t need to send your iPad to Sleep .

Here is more about what apple said in technical terms:

The USB ports on Apple computers provide 5 V (Volts) and 500 mA (Milliamps) to each port, regardless of whether the port is USB 1.1 or USB 2.0. This is in compliance with USB specifications. On some newer Intel-based Macs, such as the MacBook (13-inch, Late 2007), when a device requiring more than 5V and 500mA is connected, the port with that device connected to it becomes a high-powered port capable of offering up to 1200 mA at 12 V. That port will continue to operate as a high-powered port until the device is removed.

In short there’s nothing wrong with your iPad its just hungry for power, and needs more power than what typically your USB ports provide. So if you have the latest Mac you would never see such an error , but for Windows users USB charging is not the best option , instead go for the 10watt USB power adapter to charge up your iPad.
